📚🏀 The Knicks’ Name: A New York Story Did you know the New York Knicks got their name from New York’s Dutch roots? When the team was founded in 1946, owner Ned Irish chose “Knickerbockers” to honor the city’s early Dutch settlers. The name became famous thanks to author Washington Irving, who used the fictional character Diedrich Knickerbocker in his 1809 book "A History of New York". Irving’s humorous tale helped turn “Knickerbocker” into a popular nickname for New Yorkers. 🏙️ Fun fact: The team’s name was reportedly picked by pulling it from a hat! From Washington Irving’s pen to Madison Square Garden, the Knicks’ name is a reminder that history is everywhere—even on the basketball court.
